In the first 2 trimesters of pregnancy, mares should be fed normal levels of high quality protein such as premium Linseed. During this time the mare will go through many hormonal and physiological changes and it has been shown that feeding such a quality product improves ovarian activity and onset of oestrus prior to fertilisation.

In the first 30 days of pregnancy high levels of steroid hormones will be produced which will peak at around day 18, feeding high quality Linseed supplements should increase these.

As the pregnancy develops condition can be affected, retaining consistent feed levels of Linseed supplements can be beneficial. In the final 3 months, feed rates should be increased.

Feeding the mare an increased amount of high quality protein during lactation increases their body mass and also promotes optimum growth of the foal up to weaning. Lactation is not directly linked to nutrition in that it is very difficult to increase yield, whilst maintaining the same proportion of nutrients. However, it is possible to affect the quality of milk protein and fat, ensuring good levels of the essential amino acids and fatty acids that will promote growth and cellular integrity.

Foals have been shown to react differently depending on the energy source they receive. Although growing at the same rate foals on a fibre based diet were less distressed at weaning than those on a starch based diet and a series of tests showed greater investigative behaviour. They were less flighty and more inquisitive.

It was been shown that foals on a forage-based diet may experience shortfalls in energy, introducting an oil source can optimise desirable behavioural traits shown by the aforementioned tests.

Ultimately, both mares and foals require a higher energy intake. This can be provided by supplementing their diets using premium linseed products.

When fed alongside a forage diet, the PureFlax Linseed supplement daily feed rates for an average sized mare should be as follows:

First 2 Trimesters:

250g – Linseed Original – Super Premium Conditioner + 100ml PureFlax Linseed Oil

Final 3 Months of Pregnancy & During Lactation:

300g – Linseed Original – Super Premium Conditioner + 100ml PureFlax Linseed Oil
